As an 11-year-old singing at his local church in Lagos, Nigeria, Wizkid could never have predicted the dizzying success he would go on to enjoy within the music industry years later.
He unveiled his debut album ‘Superstar’ in 2011 and is now putting the finishing touches to his sophomore record, which is due to be released before the year is out, but recently landed an exciting new management deal with Disturbing London that will help to raise his profile and expose him to an even broader audience in the UK.
This singer devotes every minute to honing his craft and explains that he finds inspiration in the world around him, which he then translates musically in the form of intoxicating lyrics and melodies. Wizkid previously collaborated with American rapper Wale on a track called ‘Drop’ and has also been in the studio with hip-hop heavyweights The Game and Young Jeezy.
His immense popularity is down to his relatable and captivating nature, which people can’t help but gravitate towards, and it’s shown in the huge social media presence he has. Wizkid, whose real name is Ayodeji Balogun, has over 800,000 followers on Twitter and devotes a lot of his attention to interacting with fans, and it’s this accessibility and personal connection that makes for a loyal following.
Back in 2012, Wizkid completely sold out his headlining performance at London’s famed Hammersmith Apollo, he then put in an unforgettable live set at BBC Radio 1Xtra Live, and even went on to perform at London’s Wireless Festival earlier this summer. The recognition he’s received over the past few years from both the industry and public alike has been nothing short of impressive. In 2011, he won a MOBO award for the Best African Act and took home a BET Award prize in 2012 for the Best International Act: Africa. The star also has 3 nominations for the MTV European Music Awards under his belt.
As well as being a recording and performing artist, Wizkid owns a record company called StarBoy Entertainment and aims to prioritise developing the talent signed to it over the next twelve months. This entrepreneurial flair that runs through his veins keeps him constantly motivated and always striving for perfection.
He’s laying down some unshakeable foundations for a lasting career that’s only going to propel itself forward and plans to spend much of 2014 developing his name in the UK and mainland Europe.
